Microsoft has been heavily investing in Office 365 and the cloud. With all their recent acquisitions and innovations with their line of products – they are pushing heavily for organizations to move away from in-house Exchange and move to Office 365. With very few exceptions, it’s our e-mail and licensing provider of choice for a few different reasons. When companies are on in-house exchange, they have to pay for a server, licensing for that server, an exchange server, and licensing for each employee. These costs can be significant and for the average 50-user network at $400/ea, licensing alone can be upwards of $20,000 (and that’s just for the workstations). Office 365 e-mail is hosted in the cloud with Microsoft’s servers, which are almost always up (99.99% guaranteed) and running on a very fast platform – making your e-mail availability seamless for employees working both remotely and at the office.
- Licensing and updates included.
Perhaps the biggest perk of switching to Office 365 is that it includes licensing for e-mail and all the latest versions of the Microsoft Office suite of products. This means that you’re not stuck with a single version of Office and can upgrade whenever you want for the same price.
- Reduced server load and extended life.
When a server is bogged down with loads of e-mail data, it can significantly decrease its life, since it’s working so hard to sync all of that data to your employee workstations and mobile devices. Once that data is hosted in the cloud, the life of your server can be extended since it will not be bogged down with so much data and running at capacity.
Ultimately, we make the Office 365 migration suggestion to the majority of our clients. One of the limited exceptions to this is when the organization has some sort of line of business application that needs to link e-mails into client files.
